The surgical phase of implant therapy begins with anesthetizing the area that will be receiving the implant. Next, the gum is opened to reveal the bone, which is cleaned to remove any scar tissue and other fibrous tissues that may interfere with proper bone healing. Then special drills are used to prepare the bone in the proper shape necessary to receive the implant fixture.
The implant is placed using special instruments that resemble miniature mechanic’stools. Once the implant is placed in the correct 3-dimensional location, a cover screw is placed into the implant to protect the interior of the implant from debris. Finally, the gums are sutured to keep them from moving during healing. In certain situations, sutures are not needed. If sutures are placed, they will be removed after two weeks, unless resorbable sutures were used which dissolve on their own.
In cases where grafting is not needed and where abundant, firm bone is present, the implant may receive a healing abutment, which will eliminate the need for a future implant uncovery procedure.
Most patients prefer sedation for implant surgery. After 3-6 months of healing,an implant uncovery procedure may be required if the gums were completely closed over the implant.
