The thought of drilling a hole in one’s jawbone is not exactly comforting. However, it is not uncommon for patients to express how little discomfort they experienced, especially for uncomplicated implant surgeries. In fact, patients often state that implant surgery is less uncomfortable than pulling a tooth out.
It is normal for patients to be anxious on the day of surgery. While the procedure tends to be fairly comfortable with local anesthesia, most patients get nervous at the thought of making a hole in their jawbone, or find the noise of the drill to be unpleasant. This is why we offer sedation, in order to provide potent amnesia of the surgery. Because the bone drilling portion rarely lasts more than 5 minutes, patients often remark that the actual procedure was much easier than they thought it would be.
Afterwards, the gums will be sore for about three days, followed by three weeks of mild discomfort. In fact, it is very rare that anyone complains about pain in the bone itself. Almost all postoperative discomfort comes from manipulating the gums.
When the bone has completely healed around the implant, other steps are required to provide a final tooth for you. These steps are described in the Procedures section of this website.
While implant placement is rarely painful, bone and soft tissue grafting are more uncomfortable for most patients. Naturally, you may be wondering, “Do I need grafting?“
